Media Portal home theater PC app for Windows hits 1.0 Scrapplet: Drag and drop web page creator 24 Killer Portable Apps For Your USB Flash Drive Time Wasters Hall of Fame Filed under: OS Updates, Windows, Microsoft, P2P, Beta, Windows x64Official MSDN/Technet Windows 7 beta ISO appears on Pirate Bay by Lee Mathews Jan 8th 2009 Just because something is about to be publicly released doesn't mean it won't show up on a torrent tracker a little early.Both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 - which are set to be downloaded right from Microsoft by the first 2.5 million people that pounce on the links - have already appeared on major torrent sites like Pirate Bay.The torrents are labeled as .Technet.TAP.700. As I mentioned late last night, MSDN and Technet subscribers had early access to the ISO files. Clearly at least one of them felt the need to share his or her advanced copy with the P2P community.If you're waiting for the genuine article right from Redmond, the link should be posted on the WIndows 7 page some time in the next 12 hours.Tags: pirate-bay, torrent, windows-7PermalinkEmail this addthis_pub = 'weblogsinc'; addthis_options = 'digg, facebook, delicious, myspace, aolfav, propeller, google, live, stumbleupon, reddit, favorites, technorati, aim, more'; Share Comments (9)Filed under: Text, Utilities, Office, Productivity, Web services, Apple, Beta, web 2.0Apple releases iWork 09by Nik Fletcher Jan 8th 2009 It's been almost 17 months to the day since Apple last made significant (paid) updates to their flagship iWork productivity suite, but the company has announced that iWork 09 is now available.All three iWork applications have seen updates, and Apple has also announced an iWork.com Public Beta allowing users to view and comment on iWork documents.Among the changes to the desktop applications, Keynote allows you to animate objects automatically, whilst the Smart Move option allows you to slickly animate objects between slides. Pages, the iWork word processor, now ships with a built in 'Full Screen' mode for full-focus writing, and outline mode for project organization. There's also another 40 templates for your documents in this new version. The Numbers spreadsheet application allows you to categorize data far more quickly than in previous versions, includes an enhanced function browser and a formula list to quickly jump around your documents.iWork '09 is available for $79 from the Apple Store.Tags: apple, iwork, iwork-dot-com, keynote, numbers, office, pages, productivitySourcePermalinkEmail this addthis_pub = 'weblogsinc'; addthis_options = 'digg, facebook, delicious, myspace, aolfav, propeller, google, live, stumbleupon, reddit, favorites, technorati, aim, more'; Share Comments (1)adsonar_placementId=1359129;adsonar_pid=1079767;adsonar_ps=-1;adsonar_zw=450;adsonar_zh=250;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com';Filed under: Fun, Games, Windows, Freeware, Windows x64iDeaS Nintendo DS emulator updated, works well by Lee Mathews Jan 8th 2009 My four year old son (not me, of course) can't get enough of the monochrome greatness that is our collection of old Gameboy cartridges. The Gameboy, however, has taken a dirt nap and he's had to learn to play them in VirtualBoy on my laptop.What about newer games? What if your DS happened to get crushed under a truck tire and you were left with a pile of games you couldn't play?The iDeaS emulator's latest version would be one solution. With the release of v1.0.2.8 frame rates have improved greatly and several bugs have been fixed that make the emu extremely usable.Of the half dozen roms I tested (all of which I own, of course), I didn't note any major issues. There were a few cutscenes that didn't render fully and some momentary choppiness, but nothing that made the games unplayable.iDeaS worked nicely on both my systems, one running Vista Home Premium and the other with Ultimate x64.It's a free download for Windows and should, of course, be used to play only roms of games that you own - not ones that you download from, say, Pirate Bay.Tags: emulation, games, gaming, nintendoSourcePermalinkEmail this addthis_pub = 'weblogsinc'; addthis_options = 'digg, facebook, delicious, myspace, aolfav, propeller, google, live, stumbleupon, reddit, favorites, technorati, aim, more'; Share Comments (4)Filed under: Audio, Internet, Video, MobileFlycast upgrades mobile streaming media app, adds Android support by Lee Mathews Jan 8th 2009 Flycast has announced major upgrades to their mobile media streaming application. T-Mobile users will be excited to learn that it's now available for the G1 Android handset. The desktop application (built on the Adobe Air platform) has also been enhanced.Flycast now features 1,000 channels and 300 additional "personalized" channels. For a full listing, check the Flycast guide. A new partnership with AccuWeather brings enhanced weather reports, and you can now log in using your Facebook credentials if you don't want to sign up for a Flycast account."Streamshifting" has also been added, a feature which allows users to tune in to a full broadcast at any point - ensuring that you don't miss any of the good parts.I was particularly thrilled to find out that, yes, the Flycast service works in Canada. With all the content available, George Carlin would probably say "It's bad for ya."Tags: android, iphone, ipod, mobile-media, streamingSourcePermalinkEmail this addthis_pub = 'weblogsinc'; addthis_options = 'digg, facebook, delicious, myspace, aolfav, propeller, google, live, stumbleupon, reddit, favorites, technorati, aim, more'; Share Comments (2)htmlAdWH("93218057", "300", "250");//--> Filed under: Utilities, Windows Mobile, Microsoft, Beta, MobileMicrosoft realeases mobile "Tagging" barcode appby Lee Mathews Jan 8th 2009 Microsoft has entered the "additional content from a barcode" game, though similar apps like Scanlife have been available for the iPhone for quite some time. Today the beta release of Microsoft Tag - which the company says "links real life with the digital world" - hit the web.The Silverlight demo and images illustrate possible applications, from watching a movie trailer after snapping the code from a poster to browsing for a band's CD releases by clicking a concert flyer. Long Zheng has posted video of Tag in action on his blog, istartedsomething.If you'd like to give Tag a try on your handset, visit this page to download it. Content providers (and individuals) that would like to create tags can sign up here to get started.Imagine the possibilities! Instead of Ikea including half-assed instructions for assembling one of their flat-packed items, maybe you'll soon be able to snap a tag and instantly watch a video of someone else struggling to piece it together.PermalinkEmail this addthis_pub = 'weblogsinc'; addthis_options = 'digg, facebook, delicious, myspace, aolfav, propeller, google, live, stumbleupon, reddit, favorites, technorati, aim, more'; Share Comments (9)adsonar_placementId=1359130;adsonar_pid=1079767;adsonar_ps=-1;adsonar_zw=450;adsonar_zh=250;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com';Limewire 5 beta releasedby Lee Mathews Jan 8th 2009 {0 comments} Last month I took you on a visual tour of the alpha version of the upcoming Limewire v5. As announced on Limewire forums yesterday, the peer to peer app has now hit beta and is taking shape rather nicely. The interface has been totally rebuilt from scratch, and jabber support has been added. Results from your friends will now appear above those from other P2P users. Of note for developers, the...Crossblocks is a fun, stress-free puzzle game - Time Waster by Lee Mathews Jan 8th 2009 {2 comments} Crossblocks is a simple puzzle game. How is it played? Would you believe by crossing out groups of blocks to remove them from the play area?Each level presents a new configuration of blocks that you've got to fully remove, and a specified number that you must remove at once. The first twenty or so levels were fairly easy to zip through, but they give you a good feel for how the game works.After...Apple frees iTunes Store music of DRM by Nik Fletcher Jan 8th 2009 {10 comments} It's been a long time coming, but Apple has finally secured the deals to sell the entire iTunes music catalogue without DRM and the entire music library is finally available in the 256kbps AAC format that has been known as iTunes Plus until now.
Starting in April, iTunes will also be introducing variable pricing for songs - 69¢, 99¢ and $1.29 depending on the prices set by the record...Copy and paste comes to the iPhone, unofficiallyby Jay Hathaway Jan 8th 2009 {4 comments} One of the biggest complaints about the iPhone (something other mobile users cite to prove the superiority of their own operating systems) is the lack of copy and paste. Well, there's now a workaround available, and it's not from Apple.
Pastebud shows off one possible method of implementing copy and paste in the iPhone environment. It uses a combination of bookmarklets and email to copy the text...Windows 7 Beta gets official this Fridayby Lee Mathews Jan 8th 2009 {15 comments}
During his keynote address at CES tonight, Steve Ballmer made it official. The Windows 7 public beta will be made available for download on Friday, January 9th, 2009.
If you've been leery of downloading the version that's been all over the torrent trackers since last week, get your download manager ready and keep your browser tuned to Microsoft's Windows 7 page for the genuine article. As soon as I saw the opening screen, I could picture a dozen people crammed into my dorm room watching my roommate and I deathmatch over our awesome null modem cable.Yes, Doom 1 has been recompiled in Flash from the original source. It plays just like I remembered the original, and could definitely become a giant Time Waster for anyone else who was hooked on Doom when it was first released.Playing through a few levels almost made me forget how terrible the movie was (sorry, Dwayne).There's no music, but I usually had that shut off and listened to my Discman. All the old cheat codes work as well: in case you've forgotten, IDDQD activates "degreelessness" and IDKFA will enable all weapons, keys, and ammo, and boost your armor to 200%. Not that I'm saying you'll need to cheat, but when you remember something like that after 14 years, you give it a try to see if it still works.You'll need Flash 10 to play, and a non-PowerPC computer to run it.By the way: if you also enjoyed Heretic (think Medieval Doom with a crossbow), you can find an updated Shockwave version of it on this site.Thanks, Blake!View more Time WastersFeatured Galleries Sponsored Links Advertise with Download Squad.
