CasesDec 16th 2008AeroCool AeroRacer Pro CaseReview written by Chris SBuying an awesome tricked out computer case is the nerdy equivalent to buying a suped up hot rod of a car. The case is the outward manifestation of awesomeness inside. AeroCool does its best to combine car and computer with its AeroRacer Pro case. Unfortunately AeroRacer won't get you as much attention with the ladies as a real car, but it terms of nerd street cred, it works rather nicely. Also unlike a car, this case won't break the bank with its cost. So does the AeroCool AeroRacer Pro have what it takes to leave others behind in the dust? Lets take a look and find out.EditorialsDec 15th 2008Microtransactions in Online Games TodayArticle written by IanIt honestly surprises me that this topic slipped under the radar and all, but I've been having more than a few discussions and/or arguments over the topic of microtransactions in games. For those who don't know, microtransactions or micropayments are "now ... often defined to mean payments too small to be affordably processed by credit card or other electronic transaction processing mechanism" by Wikipedia. A less abstract definition would be to look at Xbox Points, Wii Points, and anything like that. So the question is "Are you getting what you pay for, or getting nickle-and-dimed?" What do you think? advertisement From The Newsroom 01.8.2009Antec Twelve Hundred Full Tower Case @ Bjorn3DBeing a big brute isn't necessarily a bad thing these days when it comes to finding a housing for a gaming rig. There can be strength in both sheer size and in sheer numbers. The Antec Twelve Hundred full tower case is an example of the two. This chassis is brutishly large and includes six fans with blue LEDs, one of which, a top mounted 200mm fan, blows directly on the CPU and RAM. The other five fans are 120mm, three for air intake, and two for air exhaust. Two more optional 120mm fans can be mounted, for a grand total of eight fans. The Antec Twelve Hundred full tower case sports twelve bays (nine of which are filled with three 120mm fans), seven expansion slots, a side window (pre-cut for optional 120mm fan), and enough room inside to fit even the largest graphics cards. Let's take a look at the Twelve Hundred and see what kind of gaming case Antec has come up with.Read More about: Antec Twelve Hundred Full Tower Case @ Bjorn3DPosted by JackW at 12:13 am - (0) Comments01.8.2009From IDE to AHCI without INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICEYou want to switch from IDE to AHCI without getting the BSOD INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE? Is it a tick or a tock product ? You have learned to know it under the Deneb codename. Smaller die size, more performance, larges caches, more tweaking potential .. yes finally the Phenom II processors have arrived. The Phenom II processors we are reviewing are: AMD Phenom II X4 920 (2.8 GHz) AMD Phenom II X4 940 (3.0 GHz)AMD made a considerable step forward with the release of Phenom II and we wanted to make sure to show you exactly that with a large amount of benchmarks, but obviously also performance tests with games as this processor might be a really good sweet spot for high-end graphics cards. Have a look at this Guru3D article a this URL.Read More about: AMD Phenom II X4 920 and 940 processor reviewPosted by JackW at 12:11 am - (0) Comments01.7.2009Koolance VID-487 GPU Water Block @ Bjorn3DWhen the “Big Boss Man” said that we were getting another Koolance full coverage video card block in for review and it was for an ATi HD 4870, I jumped at the chance. Koolance has been around from the beginning and they are well known for their high quality products. As a matter of fact, my first ever video card water block was from Koolance many years ago. One of the main reasons I stopped using them back then is that they were primarily small tube low flow systems and I had moved on to massive big tube custom built high flow systems. But here in the past year or so, Koolance has developed products that work well with both types of water cooling loops. So I’m really looking forward to seeing just how well their block will stand up to one of the industries' favorites, the Swiftech MCW60, as well as Sapphire's own high-end air cooler, the Vapor-X.Read More about: Koolance VID-487 GPU Water Block @ Bjorn3DPosted by JackW at 12:36 am - (0) Comments01.7.2009Technic3D/Chill 700WThe Chill Virtually Silent 700W PSU arrived Technic3D. It has full support for the latest PCI-Express V2.0 (6+2-pin) featuring 4 connectors and Nvidia SLI & ATI CrossFire compliance. With an amazingly high +85% Efficiency, a remarkable low ~1W Standby consumption? See you in the following Review.Read More about: Technic3D/Chill 700WPosted by JackW at 12:34 am - (0) Comments01.7.2009Cooler Master Stacker 832 SE @ Bjorn3DCooler Master has been known for filling the market with top notch enclosures, power supplies and general PC accessories. There isn’t really a trend when it comes down to desktop department. However, it’s safe to say geeks favor a clean type design with a lot of functionality rather than flashy and scary looking “things” up on their desks. If you are into Japanese cars, it’s called JDM style (Japanese Domestic Market). Although used in conjunction with automotive industry, this term describes functionality and unique style (the two have to go together). The original Stacker case became a widely popular full tower chassis amongst PC enthusiasts and custom system builders. The last couple of years brought quite a few changes to the external and internal design as well as overall functionality.Today, I’m checking out a well-designed, functional and very appealing case from Cooler Master, the Stacker 832 Special Edition. Built with efficiency and compatibility in mind the new Stacker shines with cool and useful features.Read More about: Cooler Master Stacker 832 SE @ Bjorn3DPosted by JackW at 12:34 am - (0) Comments01.7.2009Technic3D/Thermal Compund RoundupTwo new Thermal compounds from GELID and Revoltec arrived Technic3D. Benchmark Reviews has tested nearly all of the products available to the retail market in this sector, and several do well while others fall flat. It used to be that performance was the largest hurdle for mass storage NAND Solid State Drives, followed by stability, and later price. In this article, we benchmark test the linear bandwidth performance of the Mtron MOBI 3500 3.5-Inch SSD MSD-SATA3535-064 and compares it against the top competition.Read More about: Mtron MOBI 3500 SLC SSD MSD-SATA3535-064 @ Benchmark ReviewsPosted by JackW at 12:31 am - (0) Comments01.6.2009Cooler Master Aquagate Max @ Bjorn3DGranted, there are better cooling methods such as phase change. The problems with these other methods is the sheer upkeep. If you want to run sub-zero temperatures with a phase change system, you will have to insulate your motherboard from the liquid that condenses. Though water needs a little upkeep to keep it in good condition, it is not nearly as time consuming as phase changing. On top of that, there is the price difference. These cooling methods have always been more expensive than traditional air coolers. Today, Cooler Master has helped sooth this issue by putting together their Aquagate Max cooling system. This system comes with everything you will need to get your water cooled rig ready to go. There have been many kits such as this that simply don't offer any benefit over air cooling due to their cheap construction. Cooler Master hopes to buck this trend, but can they do it while still maintaining a decent price?Read More about: Cooler Master Aquagate Max @ Bjorn3DPosted by JackW at 3:10 am - (0) Comments01.6.2009Nonaoxia Nano Fans @ Bjorn3DIts not everyday a reviewer like myself can let his hair down and come up with a new way of reviewing a product. Nanoxia has done exactly that, by allowed me to let my hair down and just plain have fun, and torture a perfectly good fan. MUHAHAHAHA!!! Let's get on with the review (specifications first as always and then testing) to see how these little fans held up.Read More about: Nonaoxia Nano Fans @ Bjorn3DPosted by JackW at 3:09 am - (0) Comments01.2.2009Glacial Altair A381 (iMon) @ Bjorn3DWith high definition digital entertainment gaining popularity, having an HTPC setup is almost becoming a standard nowadays. It is easy to purchase a pre-built system for recording and playback HD contents. TiVo and Apple TV are a couple of example. Users can even add a TV tuner card to an existing system to convert it to an HTPC setup. For many computer enthusiasts, building their own system tailored to their needs is half the fun. Choosing the right case, one which offers ample expansion slots and good cooling, is essential for any HTPC. Of course, if the system can run at near silence, that would be a great plus when you immerse yourself in that digital enjoyment.Read More about: Glacial Altair A381 (iMon) @ Bjorn3DPosted by JackW at 7:35 pm - (0) Comments01.2.2009Technic3D/Perixx Periboard-306The Perixx Periboard-306 Keyboard arrived Technic3D. I've seen one PSU kill two motherboards in a row because they thought buying a flea market PSU was a good idea. I've seen video cards that cost $300 (USD) and more die because people thought their PSU would be enough to drive the GPU. You name it I've seen it. Including a $20 dollar 650 Watt PSU burn down part of a house. Computer PSU's aren't something to skimp on.You can take your chances in the PSU crap shoot and go cheap, or you can buy a quality PSU like the Seasonic M12D 850 Watt Modular and know that you will enjoy a long safe computing experience. Keep in mind that cheap PSU might still be running but, PSU that are cheap don't provide good solid voltage so every time you push that button your shortening the life of your computer. Be smart, go with a good quality PSU from a manufacturer like Seasonic that will provide years of good service and keep that gaming shrine safe from the dreaded flea market PSU catastrophe.Read More about: Seasonic M12D 850 Watt PSU @ Bjorn3DPosted by Nitro at 5:40 pm - (0) Comments01.1.2009Kingston HyperX TC DDR3 1600 @ Bjorn3DKingston Technology Company, Inc. has been an industry leader in computer memory technology arena for as long as some people can remember. Producing high quality ram since 1987 Kingston has been in on every phase of computer memory manufacturing, worth mentioning that we can think of. Then some time back they started producing enthusiast level memory with their HyperX line. We have seen HyperX and tested HyperX and we'd have to say HyperX is some seriously great ram.Every once in a while two of the titans in memory manufacturing produce a kit that could almost be twin brothers on paper. When that happens it's that rare time when we can do an SPD shootout. By that we mean we can compare two kits that will run at the same speed with the same timings against one another with a level playing field. In this case a 6 GB kit of Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600 and a kit of Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600. In all fairness to the Corsair Dominator kit the specified timings are 8-8-8-24 @ 1.65v and the Kingston kit is rated to run at 8-8-8-20 1.65v so there is that minor difference in the kits.Read More about: Kingston HyperX TC DDR3 1600 @ Bjorn3DPosted by JackW at 9:18 pm - (0) Comments01.1.2009[Guru3D] Rig of the Month - December 2008One of the series we started here at Guru3D which I'm very proud of is the Rig of the Month.
