Since posting that up I was sent and stumbled upon many more social media search engines. Yes, not just blog search engines like Google BlogSearch or Technorati, but social media search engines that attempts to index the conversations on all as many social media sites.Working backwards from today we have Artiklz which was featured on TechCrunch and sent to me by Kelvin. It seems to keep going down, probably the load from being featured on TechCrunch.Found daymix on Pat Law’s blog. This is the funkiest looking search engine of the bunch.Got to know about Samepoint and Serph from Rod who posted a comment on my blog. Can’t remember how I stumbled across Social Mention, but I quite like it.And then there’s WhosTalkin which I blogged about previously. This is an interesting trend we’re seeing. Once upon a time it was web pages that gave birth to search engines like Yahoo, then blogs were important enough to warrent Technorati, and this week I find six new search engines all racing to be the chief gateway to finding conversations on the social media. I absolutely love where this is headed. Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments » How to find conversations on the social media for free Posted on January 2, 2009 by Benjamin Koe All social media practitioners need to monitor the Web for conversations made about their brands and products. Most don’t want to pay for it.While Google is the almighty, it returns a lot of non-conversational result such as corporate websites and even splogs. Here’s a list of new, and some obscure, specialised search engines that you can use to better track online conversations for free.WhosTalkin is something I recently discovered. Their goal is to “deliver the most relevant and current conversations happening in the world of social media.” This is a very interesting service in my opinion and has the potential to be very huge. I know it tracks Twitter and some blogs (not sure how many) from my test, but I’m not sure what their complete indexed universe looks like.Ask.com’s Q&A Search is still in beta but is already one of my favourites. It indexes questions and matches it to the best answer it can find. While it obviously indexes Q&A sites like Yahoo Answers very well, I was blown away when it picked up a question on a local tech forum and tried to find an answer to it.While Web 2.0 has given much prominence to conversations on blogs, Web 1.0 discussion forums still hold most of the gems. BoardReader is my favourite forum serch engine. Not that I’m in the movie business, but I like how it has an IMDB search.Twitter Search very simply searches Twitter. But seeing how fast Twitter is growing, this is definitely a must have for any practitioner. It’s been argued that Google BlogSearch is the #1 blog search engine. But Icerocket is the one I like. Works really fast, is evolving quickly with RSS feeds and trending tools, and I’m a real fan of its timeline interface. Now with these in your war chest, you’re all ready for an exciting social media-filled 2009! Filed under: Uncategorized | 6 Comments » A doctor worth waiting for Posted on December 30, 2008 by Benjamin Koe The queue leads at least 5 shops downThere were at least 40 people in the queue outside of the clinic. The one at the head of the queue had waited from 1pm to 7pm just to get a consultation with Dr Ong in her evening session. Located in the East (Tampines) of Singapore, the queue was made up of patients young and old with some from the West (Jurong), and others further still from Indonesia. While I can’t say this is the best customer service, Nik’s Maple Clinic has definitely got word of mouth going for them. A simple Google search threw up discussion from forums such as Flowerpod, CozyCot, and Keeptouch all with words of praise. But what’s amazing still is that while they can definitely work with a bookings system, the clinic is “walk-in only” with no appointments allowed. This tactic is amazing from a marketing point of view as people (especially Singaporeans) believe that long queues mean good quality/value. They know the customer is more than willing to stand in line for hours in hope of meeting with the doctor. While this seems cruel, the clinic does have the patients interest at heart by only entertaining a maximum of 30 patients a session giving each patient enough time with the doctor. Those at the tail end are asked to leave or wait for the next session. This is definitely the longest queue I’ve seen for a doctor, but a great example of quality service which is talked about and worth suffering for. Opening for the 7pm sessionNik’s Maple Clinic is open from:Mon, Tue, Thu & Fri 9am-12.30pm, 2pm-4.30pm, 7pm-9pmWed 9am-12.30pm, 7pm-9pmSat & Sun 9am-12.30pmLocated at:Block 825 Tampines Street 81, #01-64. Singapore 520825.Please don’t try to book and you might want to bring a portable stool and food next time you visit. Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments » Know your social media industry Posted on December 23, 2008 by Benjamin Koe If you’re a social media practitioner or just really interested, here’s a quick tip for a must have.Go to Google AlertsLogin to your Google account if you haven’t alreadyCreate an alert for “social media” (include the quotes)Type: Change to NewsHow often: Once a dayNow you have a daily update on the state of the social media industry. The term “social media” has become enough of a buzz word to be used as a keyword filter. I don’t recommend getting alerts from blogs or other UGC sources because there’s too much noise. The News media acts as a great secondary filter. Filed under: Uncategorized | 2 Comments » Mobile phones are the only mass media left Posted on December 21, 2008 by Benjamin Koe Was just watching CSI:NY and the intro showed a typical public service call for a missing person on TV. This got me thinking about the effectiveness of mass media in our social media age. With so much content (on and offline), and just as many channels to consume them by, how does anyone convey a message effectively to the masses? The only medium that came to mind was the mobile phone. In Singapore, there’s over 100% penetration rate, which means everyone has one next to them all the time. Sure there are other messaging platforms such as email, and possibly Facebook, but those platforms lack the attention and focus people give to messages on their mobiles. So the public service can definitely make use of SMS to reach the masses, but when the same is done for advertising or marketing, it becomes annoying and instead of converting you piss off the consumer. My take is mobile web content. 90% of the time I surf on my mobile phone, I’m either using Google Reader or Google News. Not that I can’t access other websites, but they are not designed for the mobile platform making them difficult to read.High-qaulity content has always been the driver for mass adoption of technology. The vastness of the Internet drove adoption of broadband, well produced shows drove the adoption of cable TV. But mobile phones actually came before the content making them the ideal platform with no barrier to entry for the consumer.I believe in the near future we’ll see some really good must-see / must-read mobile only content. Will you be a part of it? Filed under: Uncategorized | 3 Comments » Ben talks on CNA about social media trends Posted on December 16, 2008 by Benjamin Koe Being interviewed by Rebecca Tan on Giant Steps In MobilityI was recently interviewed on a show called Giant Steps In Mobility which was aired on ChannelNews Asia. During my interview I talked about social media trends while seated at the corner table at Borders Bistro. Although I had a friend who spotted me on the show tell me that I was really professional, re-watching the video again, I realised a few things about myself which were quite amusing:I often looked away from Rebecca and the camera when I was thinking. Sometimes it made me look like I was rolling my eyes.I speak slower than I think I do.I smile a lot. =)If you want to see if its true, you can watch the full show here. Oh, and if you freeze frame at 25:45 you can actually read the dummy text I was typing pretending to write a blog post. Didn’t think they’d pick that up. Filed under: Uncategorized | 6 Comments » Google’s Singapore tends for 2008 Posted on December 10, 2008 by Benjamin Koe Check out Singapore’s Google Zeitgeist page. It gives you a good sense of what we local folk are interested in. Sadly, it’s leaked sex photos of a Hong Kong celebrity.2008 has been a year of change in Singapore and people have certainly been using Google to access information about these changes. The fastest rising searched items on these lists ranged from the scandalous (Edison Chen – Hong Kong celebrity whose sex photos were leaked) to the scrumptious (chicken rice – local culinary delight). Sports was also of great interest in Singapore, with searches aimed at local milestones like hosting the world’s first F1 night race, winning the bid to host the Youth Olympics in 2010 and winning its 2nd Olympics medal in 48 years (for women’s table tennis). Each of these lists shows the fastest rising searches, meaning these were the search terms that saw the biggest increase in searches during 2008 compared to 2007. Take a look below to get sense of the zeitgeist, or spirit of the times, in Singapore for 2008!Fastest Risingedison chenolympicsfacebookiphonef1google maphtcmapswikibeijing olympicsMost PopularlyricsyoutubeyahoomapgooglegameswikifacebookblogvideoGoogle News local searchessingapore olympicssingapore table tennissingapore terroristyouth olympics3g iphonephilips electronics singaporef1 night racesingapore recessionmas selamatfeng tianweiHawker Centresmaxwell hawker centrenewton hawker centrechinatown hawker centreadam road hawker centreeast coast park hawker centrewhampoa hawker centrechangi village hawker centrelagoon hawker centreholland village hawker centretekka marketLocal foodschicken ricepunggol crab noodledrunk prawnkaya toastpopiahbak kwalaksamuah cheehokkien meenasi padang Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments » Reality check Posted on November 29, 2008 by Benjamin Koe Love this video. Although Louis C.K. is a comedian, his observations are so true and I don’t know if I should be laughing or nodding. We do take technology for granted don’t we? Filed under: Uncategorized | 2 Comments » How to search for opinions online Posted on November 28, 2008 by Benjamin Koe If you’re interested in finding out what people are saying online but don’t have the budget for expensive social media monitoring services, here are some tips for doing it the Google way (read free).Be site specificUser opinions are best found on specific community sites such as TripAdvisor for travel and IMDb for movies. In Singapore, there’s a lot being said about consumer technology on HardwareZone for instance. Here’s an example of searching for opinions on the new Intel Core i7 on HardwareZone to get a feel for what Singaporeans are saying about the new processor:intel core i7 site:hardwarezone.com.sgBut you’ll notice that not all of the results thrown up are user opinions, some of them are articles, press releases, and professional reviews.Identify the honeypotKeeping on the example of HardwareZone, most of the user opinions are found in the Forum and nowhere else. You might notice pages such as:forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=2167944www.hardwarezone.com.sg/articles/view.php?id=2736&cid=2&pg=2What you would notice is that these pages contain unique terms in their URLs which we can use to our advantage. Now, we’re only interested in the actual forum posts, not the pages that have the topic listings. For that we can use:site:forums.hardwarezone.com.sg(because it’s their forums are on a sub-domain)inurl:showthread(which points to actual posts on a thread)So we end up with a Google search string that looks like:intel core i7 site:forums.hardwarezone.com.sg inurl:showthreadClean up user habitsNow you’ve honed in on the honeypot of opinions, but you’ll notice that this community uses the same forum for buying and selling which is not really rich in opinion. So to clean that up you can add:-wts -wtb -saleBy doing this you’ve eliminated most of the “want to sell”, “want to buy”, and “for sale” posts. So your search string looks like:intel core i7 site:forums.hardwarezone.com.sg inurl:showthread -wts -wtb -saleSo that’s how you use Google to mine for opinions which would be extremely useful for many product vendors.Other examplesHere are are some examples of search strings I’ve found most useful:[keywords] site:twitter.com inurl:status[keywords] site:answers.yahoo.com inurl:questions[keywords] site:amazon.com inurl:review[keywords] site:tripadvisor.com inurl:ShowUserReviews[keywords] site:epinions.com inurl:reviews -search[keywords] site:complaints.com -directoryNote: Google and other search engines have a limit of 1,000 results. But then again, that’s already a good sample of opinions. Filed under: Uncategorized | 2 Comments » How to track a “link to me” campaign Posted on November 24, 2008 by Benjamin Koe Yahoo's Site Explorer results of eok.netI’ve noticed in recent months, many marketeers are trying out simple campaigns that involve bloggers linking to a microsite, survey, or some interactive game. While web analytics is a great way to track visitors, it doesn’t have the best view of who’s linking to your site. I found Yahoo’s Site Explorer tool to be very handy for that. Here’s an example of who’s linking to this site. In fact, if you know the URL of your competition’s site, you could check out their success rate as well. Filed under: Uncategorized | 1 Comment » Next Page »
